Though I am not a "dummy" when it comes to digital photography, I have quite enjoyed several "...for Dummies" books for the simple reason that they are packed with information, in an easy to read format. "Digital Wedding Photography for Dummies" is no exception. In terms of wedding photography, I am not a pro, but have shot at weddings for friends and relatives as a back-up to their hired pro and captured, from comments I have received, some excellent shots (even back in the day with my trusty point-and-shoot, before I got into DSLR). Now I am toying with the idea of going pro and wanted to gain more perspective from people who are doing it. Author/Photographer Amber Murphy does a very good job in formatting the book and its contents.
As she says up front, you may not need to read all of it, just what you need to know at the time. That said, she starts off with the basics (like getting to know the future bride and groom to your gear selection) and guides you through what can be a stressful event if you are not fully prepared (like having extra battery packs with you, "just in case"). Covering topics such as various photographic styles, lighting, even editing photos after the event and how to present them to the couple is done with care and pretty good style. Again, easy to understand and follow throughout. Murphy finishes the book with creating a business plan, covering some of the legal basics and explaining various ways to grow your business which are logical and straightforward, however, being recently published it covers more areas than some, possibly even better - but older - wedding how-to books, making it more relevant to the times.
Digital Wedding Photography for Dummies is a great resource for anyone thinking about or planning to photograph a wedding.
I am shooting my very first wedding this summer, and my nerves are all over the place. I am not a pro...nor do I want to be. My friends are also not expecting pro results, but I would sure like to give them some special shots that 'Uncle Joe' can't give.
Because of this, I've been researching wedding photography for quite awhile and have pinned and bookmarked many different articles on the subject, and while I didn't personally find any new or 'aha!' type of information in this book, it was great to have all the same info I'd previously found contained in one easy-to-reference place.
Amber Murphy shares many tips for shooting a wedding, some that are very common sense, but that can easily be forgotten if you haven't planned properly! My favorite tip was about the wedding rings. When photographing them, be very, very, VERY careful! You don't want to lose them!
Exactly! Seems awfully obvious, doesn't it?? Well, seeing that my sister and I lost my husband's wedding band in a pond during our 10th anniversary wedding shoot... um, yes... something very obvious is worth reminding a newbie wedding photographer!
I was also very encouraged by the wedding shots in the book - they weren't all that amazing. Don't get me wrong, they're very nice...I just mean, they weren't so professional or artistic that I felt incapable of getting similar shots at my own wedding job. The book gave me that 'I can do this!' feeling.
I was also glad Amber included the section on editing. Editing can take your photos from good to WOW if you know how to enhance correctly.
