River of Dark Dreams made me feel sad to have ended. Every now and then a book comes along with ideas that make me see things in a new light. This is the first book I've read that approaches the history of slavery from a 21st century perspective, outside the bounds of traditional historiographical views of the civil war origins. Too many books simply rehash ideas or retell stories I've already heard, this one was full of new analysis and new information. To be specific, the author extensively discusses the economics of slavery and places it within the context of the industrial revolution and the international economy. The book contains several chapters on the steamboat trade on the Mississippi river and the impact of banking and factoring, steamboat technology, and the scheduling of shipments.
He also discusses the relationship between the revolution in Haiti and the Louisiana Purchase, and how many southerners were looking to expansion into Cuba and Nicaragua for the future of slavery. The books does not neglect the human aspect of slavery and the suffering of the people subjected to it.
Compelling and original from beginning to end. This is a book that should be read by any student of American History. My only quibble, and it is why I gave it four stars, is that the prose is seriously tortured. I wanted to get out my red pen and start eliminating words. Every page has at least two sentences that are a third of a page long. The author is fond of parentheticals within clauses within clauses.
He is also fond of abstract metaphors, choosing words like "eschatological" when using the concept of theology as a metaphor for ideology. The author has obviously resisted the admonition of Strunk and White to "Omit needless words.
