Honestly I'm thrilled with this little Bible. Now that my daughter is starting to take interest in board books and being read to (she's 2 1/2 months) I wanted to find an age-appropriate Bible with good theology, short but catchy text, and strong supporting illustrations. I thought that would be a relatively easy task but I was so surprised!
I am so happy that Amazon happened to recommend the Hug-A-Bible to me becasue of my purchase of Sally Lloyd-Jone's The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name (an excellent children's Bible but more appropriate for school aged children). With Lloyd Jones I knew the theology would be good so I broke my rule of looking at children's books before buying and ordered it.
I was initially surprised (and pleased) at the size of the Bible. I had assumed it was standard board book size but it's actually double that at nearly 12" tall. The cover is, in fact, hugable. Despite this being a solid board book, the furry cover (which looks like sheep's wool) makes the book incredible soft and nearly stuffed animal like. The book also appears to be well built and will probably withstand being carried around by a toddler.
Now on to the content. The illustrations are bright and beautiful using primary colors. They are simple and contrasty enough to engage even a very young infant but also colorful and detailed enough to capture the attention of a busy toddler. Another thing I like about the illustrations is that all the people have a nice tan color and have black circles for their eyes. I think it is important to teach that Jesus was not a white man with blue eyes ...
