"Trust is good, but there's always GPS." - from LOST CAT
Author Caroline Paul had lived in her San Francisco neighborhood for twenty years, thirteen of those with her twin cats, Fibby and Tibby. While Caroline was convalescing from significant injuries sustained in the crash of an "experimental plane" that she was piloting, Tibby ran away from home - and stayed away - for the first time ever. All frantic efforts to find him failed.
Five weeks after disappearing, Tibby nonchalantly returned apparently none the worse for wear.
After the initial relief over her beloved Tibby's homecoming wore off, the author began to wonder. Where had he been? He weighed slightly more than when he left, and his fur was sleeker. What's that all about? Had he gone looking for, and found, a better provider after all these years?
The ungrateful and unfaithful little wretch.
Using everything from flyers distributed around the neighborhood to a miniature CatCam purchased from a German inventor, Caroline - still hobbling on crutches - and her friend Wendy MacNaughton, who illustrated LOST CAT with drawings, set out to discover what had been Tibby's secret home away from home. What they discovered helped the two better understand the nature of Tibby, their neighbors, and perhaps felines in general.
LOST CAT is an utterly charming little story that can be read over two coffee breaks and a lunch period at work. Paul's humorous narrative is reflected and complemented by Wendy's drawings, which are clever and well done.
LOST CAT is meant for those that are owned by, or simply love, cats, and who will certainly award four or five stars just for the charm alone. (My wife and I have three: Amanda, Sissy, and Rags.) Those indifferent to or repulsed by the creatures will be less amused, no doubt, and the book is not for them.
So, take your cat in your lap and purr along with this good book.

This book is without question one of the most fun I've had a chance to read in a long time, and yet because I, too, have had numerous feline companions over the years, it definitely strikes a deeper chord with me as well.
Although Wendy MacNaughton's illustrations make this at first glance seem like a children's book, it is definitely for adults. This, by the way, is another occasion when I regret that as an Amazon Vine reader, I'm only seeing the advance reading copy. Most of the illustrations in this format are rendered in grey tones, whereas the final version will be in full color. From the few examples given, I know that they will be spectacular; even the B-W renderings are delightful.
What makes this book meaningful in the extreme is, of course, the insight into both feline and human psychology that Caroline Paul manifests. I can relate on several levels; as already mentioned, I have had cats for most of my own life. My most recent cats have indeed been of the "indoor-only" variety, but prior to that I experienced the anguish of feline disappearances and can therefore relate to Caroline's distress over Tibby's vanishing act. Also, much more recently, I've had the experience of a spouse with a broken ankle, and therefore I can sympathize with Wendy for her difficulties in dealing with Caroline's disablement, and admire her willingness to hang in there during the ups and downs of the recuperation and the "great tracking endeavor".
The fun, of course, comes with the utter hilarity of the situation of trying to "track the cat" with the GPS device, the cat cam, and various direct canvassing efforts. If the reader doesn't ROTFL, or at least chuckle, he or she must be CATatonic...LOL. I strongly urge any cat fancier, and even those who are somewhat indifferent, to allow Paul's and MacNaughton's book to brighten their day. For those who hate cats...well, they probably don't have what it takes to appreciate this mini masterpiece.
