This third edition of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook reaffirms its international reputation as “the handbook of choice” for today’s practicing mining engineer. It distills the body of knowledge that characterizes mining engineering as a disciplinary field and has subsequently helped to inspire and inform generations of mining professionals.
Virtually all of the information is original content, representing the latest information from more than 250 internationally recognized mining industry experts.
Within the handbook’s 115 thought-provoking chapters are current topics relevant to today’s mining professional:
- Analyzing how the mining and minerals industry will develop over the medium and long term—why such changes are inevitable, what this will mean in terms of challenges, and how they could be managed
- Explaining the mechanics associated with the multifaceted world of mine and mineral economics, from the decisions associated with how best to finance a single piece of high-value equipment to the long-term cash-flow issues associated with mine planning at a mature operation
- Describing the recent and ongoing technical initiatives and engineering developments in relation to robotics, automation, acid rock drainage, block caving optimization, or process dewatering methods
- Examining in detail the methods and equipment available to achieve efficient, predictable, and safe rock breaking
- Identifying the salient points that dictate which is the safest, most efficient, and most versatile extraction method to employ, as well as describing in detail how each alternative is engineered
- Discussing the impacts that social and environmental issues have on mining from the pre-exploration phase to end-of-mine issues and beyond, and how to manage these two increasingly important factors to the benefit of both the mining companies and other stakeholders

I have been appointed as a Senior Mechanical Engineer of Mobile Equipment at a mining company. I brought these volumes to improve my understanding of mining and to read about the latest developments therein, especially regarding the technology being employed in the mining environment.
This is certainly not light reading for anyone. And the technical details get quickly too much for anyone not intimately involved in the mining environment. It gives very good information about the business of mining, and even about the operations of mining, but not enough about the technology of mining.
The contributing authors and reviewers are exhaustive. The pages smack of comprehension of the subjects, and the consistency of the writing style is remarkable.
The references for each chapter are recent enough where necessary. For instance ?1.2 Current Trends in Mining and ?1.3 Future Trends in Mining have references as recent as 2008. ?9.7 - Physical Asset Management - gives an excellent summary of PAS 55:2008! This is remarkable, many of the books on physical asset management released around this time did not consider PAS 55:2008.
Yet I would have liked to see a chapter dedicated to mining technology, or sections within the mining methods dedicated to the technology. e.g. Part 10 (surface extraction) mentions enough of the primary equipment, but not nearly enough of the ancillary functions and equipment. In ?12.2 and ?12.3 (Equipment Selection and Sizing for hard- and soft rock) has gone a long way to survey the technology, but can still be improved. I recommend listing the activities required for an operation and the subsequent equipment that can be used to perform those activities. The selection criteria and methods can be discussed in less detail.
