An accessible theology for Palestinian liberation
By Janice L. Miller on March 18, 2014
Format: Kindle Edition Amazon Verified Purchase
Dr. Mitri Raheb's new book presents a Palestinian theology in layperson's language, challenging westerners in our assumptions about the Arab world and our determination to control the rest of the world; a thought-provoking critique of the American empire. An excellent read, especially now as diplomatic efforts are being pressed. The book is born from the heart of the Palestinian struggle—after 47 years of occupation, and 66 years since Palestinians were forced from their homes. Raheb's theology flows from the Palestinian struggle—how do Palestinian Christians maintain their faith when the Bible is used to justify their oppression?

"Buying the field"
By Arnie Voigt on March 27, 2014
Format: Kindle Edition Amazon Verified Purchase
In the Epilogue to his book, Faith in the Face of Empire, author Mitri Raheb refers us to Jeremiah 32: Jeremiah is in prison, the city destroyed, the temple burned, and yet Jeremiah is asked to buy his cousin’s field. Raheb writes: “He was able to imagine a future beyond the destruction around him.” And then, “Hope was deciding to invest in the area at a time when no sane person would dare.” Those words describe the author himself. Raheb is a Palestinian pastor who given his gifts and talents easily could have emigrated and found a parish or academic perch elsewhere. But he stayed in his home town of Bethlehem and “bought the field”: under his guidance programs and institutions of mercy, well-being, and education have been established. Faith in the Face of Empire is a reading of “The Bible Through Palestinian Eyes” which contextualizes the Biblical narrative with a Palestinian face and speaks of how faith creatively resists the machinations of the present day empire, Israeli occupation. One can almost hear the author breathe out his own journey of “faith and embodied creative resistance,” a quality for which he credits his father. “Resistance,” he writes, “is action, not reaction,” and “Faith is nothing less than developing the bold vision of a new reality and mobilizing the needed resources to make it happen.” This book is a solid and literate resource for anyone wishing understanding to join in “buying the field."

Valuable explanation of how Palestinians read the Bible and why
By Pauline Coffman on March 17, 2014
Format: Kindle Edition Amazon Verified Purchase
I found Mitri Raheb's new book to be a valuable resource for those who want a quick summary of the ways the "Empire (Israel)" affects the lives of Palestinians. The chapters are short and easy to grasp. Anyone looking for an up-to-date summary of the Israel/Palestine conflict and the issues would do well to read this book.

Refreshed View
By John Daniel Gore on March 11, 2014
Format: Paperback
As someone who worked in the region for 18 months -- and shook Dr. Raheb's hand regularly on Sunday mornings -- I thought I knew my own heart regarding the Bible & the conflict. This book brought my thoughts back into focus in a refreshing way; it truly is not a retelling of the same facts but an illuminating treatise about the regions faith & sacred literature and how Palestine's tense geo-political position made it the perfect stage for the Gospel teachings -- and it remains so. I read the whole thing in two days, enthralled.

A courageous book from one of Palestinian Christianity's most prophetic leaders
By Anorak44 on February 20, 2014
Format: Paperback
This book is courageous and essential reading for anyone wishing to place Israel’s 47-year occupation of the Palestinian territories into its proper historical, humanitarian, Christological and Biblical context. Dr Mitri Raheb is a Lutheran pastor from Bethlehem. He notes that for most of its long history, ‘Occupied Palestine has unfortunately been the norm’. Raheb makes some striking parallels between the Roman occupation and the present time. Emphasising the Palestinian identity of Jesus, without of course denying his Jewishness, he draws on Christ’s teachings to construct a theology of non-violent resistance to oppression and injustice (Raheb prefers the term ‘creative resistance’, since non-violence is a ‘negation of a negative’). It is an invigorating and challenging read.

It is all too easy to get depressed about the prospects for peace in Israel and Palestine. But Raheb strikes a surprisingly positive note. In what is perhaps the most striking part of his book, based on his detailed exegesis of Matthew 5:5 (“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth”), he sees the plight of Palestine through the prism of longue durée, an historical continuum. He writes:

“There isn’t a single regional empire that at some point did not occupy Palestine. The first empire to occupy Palestine was that of the Assyrians, in 722 BC; it stayed for over two hundred years. The Assyrians were replaced by the Babylonians in 587 BC, who didn’t last because they were pushed out by the Persians in 538 BC. The Persians didn’t stay long either, because they were forced to leave by Alexander the Great. Then there were the Romans.

think
By richard beck on March 29, 2014
Format: Paperback
Pastor Raheb appears to have turned living under "occupation" in to a full time occupation. Supposedly living under duress by the "Empire" he was allowed to travet to Europe to receive an education, he has written 16 books, he is the CEO of an American based not-for-profit entity and his family travels the world with him on book tours.

His biblical view through Palestinian eyes is nothing more than old school anti-semitism with a new twist. It is most disturbing that his views have found a home in the faith of Martin Luther, one of the most virulent anti-semites the world has seen.
